Configuration and requirements of ICU monitor

The patient monitor is the basic device in ICU. It can monitor multilead ECG, blood pressure (invasive or non-invasive), RESP, SpO2, TEMP and other waveform or parameters in real time and dynamically. It also can analyze and process the measured parameters, storage data, playback waveform and so on. In ICU construction, monitoring device can be divided into single-bed independent monitoring system and central monitoring system.

1. Type of the monitoring patient
To chose the suitable monitor for ICU, patients' type should be considered. Such as for cardiac patients it should monitoring and analysis of arrhythmias. For infants and children percutaneous C02 monitoring is required. And for unstable patients waveform playback is required.

2. Parameter selection of patient monitor
Bedside monitor is the basis device of ICU. Modern monitors are mainly have ECG, RESP, NIBP(IBP), TEMP, SpO2 and other test parameters. Some monitors have extended parameter module which can be made into plug-in module. When other parameters are needed, new modules can be inserted into the host for upgrading. It is better to choose the same brand and model of monitor in the same ICU unit. Each bed is equipped with general common monitor, not commonly used parameter module can be as spare parts that both equipped with one or two pieces, which can be interchangeable application.
There are many functional parameters available for modern monitors. Such as adult and neonatal multi-channel ECG (ECO), 12-lead ecg, arrhythmia monitoring and analysis, bedside ST segment monitoring and analysis, adult and neonatal NIBP, SPO2,RESP, body cavity&surface TEMP, 1-4 channel IBP, intracranial pressure monitoring, C0 mixed SVO2, mainstream ETCO2/2, side flow ETCO2, oxygen and nitrous oxide, GAS, EEG, basic physiological function calculation, drug dose calculation, etc.. And printing and storage functions are available.

3. Quantity of monitor. The ICU monitor as basic device, is installed 1pcs for each bed and fixed on the bedside or functional column for easy observation.

4. Central monitoring system
The multi-parameter central monitoring system is to display various monitoring waveforms and physiological parameters obtained by the bedside monitors of patients in each bed at the same time on the large-screen monitor of the central monitoring through the network, so that medical staff can effectively implement effective measures for each patient. In the construction of modern ICU, a central monitoring system is generally established. The central monitoring system is install in the ICU nurse station, which can centrally monitor the multi-bed data. It has a large color screen to display the monitoring information of the entire ICU unit at the same time, and can enlarge the single-bed monitoring data and waveform. Set abnormal waveform alarm function, each bed input more than 10 parameters, two-way data transmission, and equipped with a printer. The digital network used by the central monitoring system is mostly star structure, and the monitoring systems produced by many companies use computers for communication. The advantage is that both the bedside monitor and the central monitor are regarded as a node in the network. Central system as a network server, the bedside monitor and the central monitor can transmit information in both directions, and the bedside monitors can also communicate with each other. The central monitoring system can set up a real-time waveform observation workstation and a HIS workstation. Through the gateway, and Web Browser can be used to observe the real-time waveform image, zoom in and observe the waveform information of a certain bed, extract abnormal waveforms from the server for playback, conduct trend analysis, and view store up to 100h of ECG waveforms, and can perform QRS wave, ST segment, T-segment wave analysis, doctors can view real-time / historical data and information of patients at any node of the hospital network.
